Erling Haaland rookie cards: which ones to look for
A plain-English guide to Erling Haaland's early cards: the Salzburg-era Topps Chrome rookies, the Panini sticker people argue about, and how to check a copy before you buy.

Erling Haaland is one of the most collected footballers around, so it's no surprise his early cards get searched for constantly. The trouble is that "Haaland rookie" gets stuck on a lot of listings that aren't really his first cards. This guide walks through the cards collectors usually mean, what makes each one different, and what to check before you pay a rookie price. If the term itself is new to you, read what RC means on football cards first.
Why his rookies come from the 2019–20 season
Haaland made his senior debut in Norway years before he became a household name, but the cards most collectors treat as his rookies come from 2019–20, when he was scoring for RB Salzburg and then moved to Borussia Dortmund. Sports Card Specialist notes collectors had to wait until 2019 for his first rookie cards. That season produced Topps cards under both the Champions League and Bundesliga licences, which is why there's more than one card people call his rookie.
2019–20 Topps Chrome UEFA Champions League
This is the Haaland rookie most people picture: Topps Chrome, Champions League licence, Haaland in Salzburg kit. Sold listings commonly describe it as card #74 with the RC logo. The set's base checklist runs to 100 cards, and Topps printed a long list of parallels, including a Refractor, Purple /250, Blue /150, Green /99, Gold /50, Orange /25, Red /10 and a one-of-one SuperFractor, according to published checklists. There's also a Chrome autograph, listed as CA-EH. There's also a Sapphire Edition version, which collectors treat as a separate release, so check which one a listing is actually selling.
2019–20 Topps Chrome Bundesliga
Haaland joined Dortmund in January 2020, and Topps Chrome Bundesliga from that season gave him early cards in Dortmund yellow. Sports Card Specialist lists the base card as #72 and rates the autograph version, and its low-numbered parallels, as his strongest rookies. Whether you prefer this card or the Champions League version is down to taste: some collectors want Salzburg, the club where he broke through, while others want Dortmund, where he became a star.
The Panini sticker debate
A 2019–20 Panini Fussball sticker of Haaland in Salzburg colours (listed as #32 by Sports Card Specialist) is sometimes called his true rookie because it came out first. It's a sticker, not a card, and the same source points out that it has been reprinted several times because of demand, with small differences such as darker colours and different borders. If you want an original, a graded copy from a known company is the safer route. Whether a sticker counts as a rookie card is something collectors argue about, so don't pay a card price assuming everyone agrees.
Base, parallels and autographs
With Chrome, the plain base card is the cheapest way in. Refractors and coloured parallels are versions of the same card, and the numbered ones carry a serial stamp such as 12/99 on the back. Don't compare the price of a Gold /50 with a base card, and don't take a seller's word for the colour: refractor finishes look different under different lighting, so ask for a close-up of the serial number. Autographs are the top end, and they're the cards where checking the seller and the authentication matters most.
Checking a Haaland card before you buy
Confirm the year, set, licence (Champions League or Bundesliga) and card number. Check the RC logo is on the card itself. Work out whether it's the base card, a refractor or a numbered parallel, and whether it's the standard Chrome or the Sapphire version. Look closely at the corners, edges, surface and centring on both sides, because Chrome cards show marks easily. For a graded card, check the company, grade and certificate number on the grading company's own website.
Working out a fair price
Haaland prices move with his form and with transfer news, so asking prices can be well out of date. Look at recent sold listings for the exact same card, version and grade, and note the date and currency of each sale. A PSA 10 and a raw copy are different cards for pricing purposes. We don't quote a current value here because it changes too quickly to be useful in an article.
