How to post trading cards in the UK
Post football trading cards safely in the UK: pack singles and slabs, check delivery cover, follow eBay's order details and keep dispatch evidence.

To post trading cards safely in the UK, sleeve the card, add suitable rigid support, prevent movement and use outer packaging that resists bending. Weigh the finished package and choose a service whose terms suit the item. Tracking, compensation and marketplace protection are separate checks—not three names for the same promise.
How to pack trading cards for posting
This is practical packing advice, not a Royal Mail-prescribed recipe. Do not squeeze a thick card into a narrow holder or let tape touch the card.
| Item | Protection | Before closing |
|---|---|---|
| Raw single | A fitted sleeve and suitable rigid holder, with supports and snug outer packaging. | Check corners are not caught, the holder cannot slide and nothing presses on the card. |
| Thick patch card | Sleeve and holder matched to its actual thickness. | Never force it into a standard toploader. |
| Graded slab | Protect the holder and cushion it within rigid outer packaging. | Prevent movement; a slab can scratch or crack. |
| Multiple-card lot | Protect cards individually or in appropriate compartments; separate hard holders. | Avoid tight bands, compressed stacks and holders scraping together. |
Sending trading cards with Royal Mail
Use the current service terms, packed dimensions and value evidence. A maximum advertised compensation amount does not automatically cover every collectible. Ask the carrier if trading-card eligibility is unclear.
| Question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Letter, large letter or parcel? | Measure and weigh the finished package against current service limits. |
| Is it tracked? | Check the actual tracking and delivery features for the selected service. |
| Is the card covered? | Read compensation eligibility, exclusions, evidence and value limits. |
| What about Special Delivery? | Royal Mail advertises tracking, photo/signature on delivery and compensation options; check applicable conditions. |
Posting an eBay card sale
Use the delivery process recorded in the live order. eBay UK describes Simple Delivery for eligible private-seller orders, with exceptions; your listing flow and current terms determine what applies. Our eBay photo guide helps document condition before packing.
| Step | Do this | Avoid this |
|---|---|---|
| Address | Use the checkout address and supported resolution process. | Changing the destination just because a message asks. |
| Label | Use the required or supported label and accurate packed weight/size. | Choosing a cheaper category that the package does not fit. |
| Dispatch | Meet the stated dispatch timeframe and retain acceptance evidence. | Treating a photo of an envelope as proof the carrier received it. |
| Tracking | Attach information through the platform’s supported process. | Assuming a tracking number alone guarantees seller protection. |
What evidence should you keep?
Save the order, condition photos, packing photos, receipt and tracking reference. A photograph records preparation; a carrier receipt records acceptance when provided. Claims still depend on the applicable rules. Keep buyer labels and addresses private. Our selling guide covers pricing and the rest of the transaction.
Can you post trading cards abroad?
Yes, subject to the destination, service and item rules, but UK inland terms do not automatically apply overseas. Check customs details, tracking, cover and any marketplace-managed international stage. Describe the shipment and value accurately; do not mark a commercial sale as a gift on request. Follow the address recorded in the order.
The final posting checklist
Match the card to the order, record condition, sleeve and support it, stop movement, weigh and measure the package, check service terms, dispatch correctly and save the receipt. A “do not bend” note is not a substitute for suitable packaging. For protection before dispatch, see safe card storage. Cover: an illustrative packing setup.
